Model Cadet was born in 1946 and was the son of Requested (sire) and Hedepine (dam). He began his career as a promising 2-year-old when he won the Washington Park Futurity. Model Cadet was the first Kentucky Derby entry for the Rices. He was entered in the 1949 Derby and finished 7th. Model Cadet was trained by Tom Smith and with jockey Ovie Scurlock. Ada showed high regard for Model Cadet by paying $2,250 to name him as a supplementary entry for the Preakness where he placed 7th out of a field of 9 horses.
